App Store Links Do Nothing in Instagram: What Changed and How to Fix It
Since July 2026, iPhone users who tap an App Store link inside Instagram often see nothing happen. What was reported, why an in-app browser can swallow a store link, the ways out and what each one costs, and what Appy links now do about it on every plan.

What people saw
In July 2026 a developer opened a thread on Apple’s developer forums titled “Did Instagram just blocked App Store Links?”. Tapping an App Store link inside Instagram on an iPhone did nothing: no error, no page, no App Store. The same link worked in Safari, Facebook and YouTube on the same phone. By October 23 the thread had eleven replies from other app makers and more than 4,000 views.
Two details matter. Android was fine: in Instagram’s Android browser, Google Play links still opened. And Instagram was not alone: one developer had seen the same thing in TikTok first. Posters linked the start to an Instagram update.
As far as we can find on October 23, 2026, neither Apple nor Meta has commented. One reply in August says Meta fixed it in a later update, with no version or source. Treat the problem as live until your own test says otherwise. The test takes a minute and is further down.
Where App Store links got stuck
The reports describe one platform and two apps. Everything else kept working.
Why a store link can die in an in-app browser
Instagram and TikTok don’t hand your link to Safari. They open it in a browser of their own, built on Apple’s WKWebView, and their code sees every navigation before it happens. Felix Krause documented this for both apps in 2022, and the apps still work that way.
A web page is easy for that browser: it just loads it. An App Store link is different. To show the listing, iOS has to leave the browser and open the App Store app, and inside an in-app browser that hand-off only happens if the host app passes it on. If Instagram’s code cancels it, or never passes it on, nothing seems to happen. There is no error message, because as far as the browser is concerned, nothing failed.
Neither company has said what changed, so this explains the mechanism, not the cause. It does fit the pattern in the reports: the same link works wherever the app lets iOS take over, and Android hands Play links to the Play Store through a different route.
Five ways out, and what each one costs
None of these is documented by Meta. They differ in how much they ask of the person tapping.
The ⋯ menu
Instagram’s ⋯ menu can open the page in the default browser, and from Safari the App Store opens normally. It always works, but only for people who know to do it. Several posters in the Apple thread added this instruction to a redirect page.
The x-safari-https:// scheme
Write the link as x-safari-https://apps.apple.com/… and iOS opens it in Safari. Apple doesn’t document the scheme. Community testing confirmed it on iOS 15, 17 and 18 and found it failing on iOS 16 (Christian Tietze, June 2024 update). Short.io documents it for Instagram links and notes that people see a prompt before they leave the app.
The itms-apps:// scheme
The App Store’s own scheme skips the web page. apppa.ge, a link vendor that has written about this problem, says itms-apps links fail inside Instagram in the same way. We found no report saying otherwise.
An Instagram-only scheme
The accepted answer in the Apple thread uses instagram://extbrowser to push the page out to the browser. Meta doesn’t document it and we found no second source, so it is a bet on undocumented behaviour.
A redirect service
Several posters switched to tools that show a page first and then send people on. It is the same idea as the options above, packaged. Check what yours does on iOS 16, and whether it keeps your campaign parameters.
What an Appy link does now
An Appy link that sends an iPhone to the App Store now checks where it was tapped. Inside Instagram or TikTok it shows this page instead of redirecting. It works on every plan, Free included, and on every link, with or without a deep link.
- 1
Open in Safari
The page tries this by itself a moment after it loads, on iOS 15 and on iOS 17 or later. Instagram asks the person to confirm leaving the app, Safari opens the App Store link and the App Store app takes over.
- 2
Try the App Store here
The plain App Store link, for the day Instagram lets it through again. On iOS 16, where the Safari scheme fails, this is the first button.
- 3
Doesn’t open? Use Safari
If the page is still on screen two and a half seconds later, it highlights the two manual steps.
Where each tap goes
The page appears only where the problem was reported. Everywhere else the link stays a single redirect.

What stays the same
Clicks are counted the moment the link is tapped, before the page shows, so your numbers don’t shift. On Pro, the in-app browser breakdown still shows how many taps came from Instagram and TikTok.
App Store campaign tokens survive the detour. If you saved a provider token, the Safari link carries the same pt and ct values, so App Store Connect still credits the link.
What this doesn’t do is open your installed app from Instagram. That is a separate problem with its own rules, covered in our guide to in-app browsers and deep links.
Test your own link in a minute
Put it where people tap it
Use a story, a DM to yourself or your bio. A link opened from Notes or Safari never goes through Instagram’s browser.
Tap it on an iPhone
If the App Store opens, Instagram lets your link through today. If nothing happens, you have the problem.
Check Android too
Google Play should open straight away. If it doesn’t, look at your link before you blame Instagram.
Repeat after Instagram updates
The reports started after an app update and could end with one. A check after each update takes a minute.
Read the numbers
Compare taps from Instagram’s browser with first-time downloads in App Store Connect. Plenty of iPhone taps with almost no downloads, while Android looks normal, is what this problem looks like.

App Store links in Instagram: questions
Why don’t App Store links open in Instagram?
Instagram opens links in its own browser, and on iPhone that browser has to hand App Store links over to the App Store app. Since July 2026, developers have reported that the hand-off doesn’t happen: the tap does nothing. Neither Apple nor Meta has explained it.
Does it happen on Android?
Not according to the reports. In Instagram’s Android browser, Google Play links kept opening the Play Store.
Is TikTok affected too?
One developer in the same Apple forum thread saw the problem in TikTok first. TikTok also uses its own in-app browser on iPhone.
Can a link make Instagram open Safari?
There is no documented way. The x-safari-https:// scheme opens Safari on iOS 15 and on iOS 17 or later in community tests, after a prompt in Instagram, and fails on iOS 16. Appy links try it and keep the manual steps on the same page.
Do I need a paid plan for the fix?
No. Every Appy link that sends an iPhone to the App Store gets the page inside Instagram and TikTok, on every plan. Opening your installed app with a deep link is part of Pro.
Will App Store Connect still credit my campaign?
Yes. The link Safari opens carries the same pt and ct parameters as the original App Store link.
Has Meta fixed it?
One reply in August 2026 says so, with no version or source, and we found no statement from Meta. Test your own link on an iPhone after each Instagram update.
