Static or dynamic
What happens after you print
A static QR code stores your URL inside the pattern. That is what the free generator above makes. It never expires and needs no account, but the destination is fixed the moment it goes to print, and nobody counts the scans.
A dynamic QR code stores a short link instead, and the link decides where each scan goes. You can change the destination after the posters are up, send iPhones to the App Store and Android phones to Google Play from the same code, and see how many people scanned.
| Side by side | Static QR (this generator) | Appy QR (free account) |
|---|---|---|
| Change the destination after printing | No, a new code means a reprint | Yes, anytime, same printed code |
| iPhone and Android | Everyone gets the same URL | App Store, Google Play, AppGallery or web, per device |
| Scan counts | None | Every scan counted |
| Colors, shapes and center logo | Yes | Yes |
| Account | Not needed | Free plan, no credit card |
| When it stops working | When the page it points to goes offline | Keeps redirecting on every plan, even if you cancel |
One code, every phone
One QR code for the App Store and Google Play
An App Store link only helps iPhone users, and a Google Play link only helps Android users. Printing two codes side by side splits your space, your call to action and your numbers.
Encode one Appy link instead. When someone scans, the link checks the phone and sends it to the right place: the App Store on iPhone, Google Play on Android, AppGallery on Huawei, and your website on a computer.
Where it works
Where a QR code earns the scan
Every placement is scanned from a different distance, in different light, by people in a different hurry. Here is what matters for each one.
Packaging and labels
People scan at home with the product in their hand. Send them to the app or the product screen, not to your homepage.
2.5–4 cm wide for scans from 10–30 cm
Posters and events
Scanned from a few steps away, often while walking past a booth or a shop window. Size is where most poster codes fail.
10–30 cm wide for scans from 1–3 m
TV and CTV ads
The ad plays on the TV, the scan happens on a phone across the room. Give viewers time, and say out loud what the scan gets them.
At least 8–10% of screen height, on screen for 10 seconds or more
Receipts and in-store
Counter cards, shelf talkers and receipts reach people who are already buying. A good moment for a loyalty app or a first-order offer.
Counter cards: 4–8 cm wide for scans from 30–80 cm
Business cards
Cards stay in wallets for years. With a dynamic code, a new job title, portfolio or app does not mean a new box of cards.
Update the destination instead of reprinting
Print it right
Five checks before you print
Most failed scans come down to size, contrast, crowding or a code nobody tested on a phone.
Size it for the distance
distance / 10Divide the scanning distance by 10 to get the minimum width. Scanned from 50 cm, start around 5 cm. From 2 meters, around 20 cm.
Placement Distance Width Product packaging 10-30 cm 2.5-4 cm Flyers, brochures, direct mail 20-50 cm 3-5 cm Counter cards, table tents, shelf talkers 30-80 cm 4-8 cm Posters and window signage 1-3 m 10-30 cm Trade show booth graphics or large-format signage 2-5 m 20-50 cm Keep strong contrast
A dark code on a light, plain background scans fastest. Brand colors work as long as the code stays clearly darker than what is behind it. Check it on the final material, not only on screen.
Leave a quiet zone
Keep an empty margin on all four sides; the border padding control above builds it into the image. Text, frames and photos that touch the code make it harder for cameras to find.
Keep the logo small
A center logo works when it stays small and never covers the three corner squares. After adding one, do not shrink the code to make room.
Test before you print
Print at final size and scan from the real distance and angle, on an iPhone and on an Android phone. Follow the scan all the way to the store page.
Free Appy account
Keep the design. Make the code dynamic.
The generator above gives you a static image. Create the same code in Appy and it becomes a link you can edit and measure, with the same colors, shapes and logo.
- Change the destination after printing
- iPhone to the App Store, Android to Google Play, from one code
- See how many people scanned
- Free plan
- No credit card
- Unlimited scans
- Keeps working if you cancel
QR code questions
Is this QR code generator free?
Yes. You can create, style and download QR codes without an account. They are static codes, so they keep working as long as the page they point to exists.
What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?
A static QR code stores the URL in the pattern itself, so the destination can never change and scans are not counted. A dynamic QR code stores a short link: you can change where it points after printing and see how many times it was scanned.
Can I change where a QR code points after printing?
Not with a static code. The URL is part of the image, so a new destination means a new code and a reprint. If you create the code in a free Appy account, it encodes an Appy link, and you can edit the destination in the dashboard at any time while the printed code stays the same.
Can one QR code open the App Store on iPhone and Google Play on Android?
Yes, if the code points to a smart link rather than a store page. With Appy, iPhones go to the App Store, Android phones to Google Play, Huawei phones to AppGallery and computers to your website, all from one code.
Can I add my logo to the center?
Yes. Turn on the center logo option and upload your own badge, or keep the default Appy icon. Keep the logo small so the code still scans.
Will a logo or brand colors stop the code from scanning?
Not if the logo stays small, the three corner squares stay uncovered and the code is clearly darker than its background. Test the printed result on an iPhone and an Android phone before a large print run.
What file formats can I download?
PNG for immediate use, SVG for vector design and large prints, and WEBP for lightweight web assets. Downloads are 1024 × 1024 px.
How big should I print my QR code?
Divide the scanning distance by 10: about 5 cm for a flyer read from 50 cm, about 20 cm for a poster read from 2 meters. For TV, keep the code at least 8–10% of screen height for 10 seconds or more.
Do QR codes expire or have a scan limit?
A static code from this generator has no expiry date and no scan limit; it stops working only if the page behind it goes offline. Appy links have no scan limit either and keep redirecting on every plan, even if you cancel.
How do I track scans and app installs from a QR code?
A static code cannot be tracked. Create the code from an Appy link and every scan is counted as a visit to that link; the free plan includes basic analytics with 90-day retention. Use a separate link per placement to compare posters, packaging and screens.
